Chatti Bariatu Block has been allocated to NTPC by MoC vide Allotment Agreement dated 30.03.2015. It is located in the northern part of the North Karanpura Coalfield and lies in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand. This block is contiguous to Pachra block in the west, Dumri block in the north, Kerendari ’A’ in the east owned by NTPC and Chatti Bariatu South block located in the south (presently clubbed with Chatti Bariatu Coal Block as per Allotment Agreement).

The block is about 50 km. from the headquarters of Hazaribagh district and is connected by an all weather metalled road going from Hazaribagh to Tandwa and the nearest rail head is Ray Railway Station at a distance of about 38 Km from the block on Barkakana-Dehri-on-sone loop line.

The Chatti Bariatu block shows more or less flat terrain with gentle undulations. The drainage of the block is controlled by two prominent nalas, of which one flows west to east in northern part and locally called as Baledeori nala and other nala flows south joins Baledeori nala further downstream.

The Mining Plan and Mine Closure Plan of Chatti Bariatu Block is already approved by Ministry of Coal for a targeted capacity of 7 MTPA. Environment clearance and Forest clearance has been granted by MoEF.

GEOLOGY

Total area of the allotted coal block is 646.23 Ha. The block is faulted with 3 faults. The strike of the strata is roughly E-W with southerly dip of 3o to 15o. The dip in western part of the block is flat having generally 4o to 6o. The dip in central and eastern part of the property has steepened to generally 7o to 15o.

There are mainly five coal seams in Barakar formation, viz seams-I, II, III, IV & Local. The generalized thickness range of most potential coal seams of the block are Seam-I Bottom (3m-5m), Seam-I Top &Middle (8m to 11m), Seam-II Bottom (5m to 7m), Seam-II Top (1m to 2m) , Seam-III Bottom (1.0m to 1.5m), Seam-III Top (1m to 2m), Local Seam ( 1m to 1.5m), Seam-IV (5m to 7m) & Seam-IVA ( 1.0 m to 1.5 m). The remaining coal seams are thin having thickness generally less than 1m.

The total Mineable reserve in the block is 151.80 Million tones. The total corresponding overburden/ interburden is estimated as 259.49 million cubic meters. The average stripping ratio is 1.71.
