SALIENT TECHNICAL FEATURES

Name of the work : Cleaning of fill packs of Stage- II Cooling Towers, TSTPS (2014-15)

PLANT OVERVIEW

NTPC Talcher-Kaniha (TSTPS) plant is located in Kaniha block under Talcher sub-division of Angul district in the state of Odisha having latitude and longitude 2106’ N and 8504’ e respectively. The plant and colony area is located on the right bank of Brahmani river and Tikra Nadi and bound by villages Rangabeda, Gadashila, Tolakabeda, Patharamunda, Bhimakanda and PWD road.

STAGE - I - 2 Units, each of 500 MW - Total 1000 MW

STAGE- II - 4 Units, each of 500 MW - Total 2000 MW

EQUIPMENTS INVOLVED

The equipments under consideration consists of Stage- IICooling Towers and associated pipe lines and valves spread all over the plant at TSTPP Site within 3 km radius comes under the purview of the subject contract.

JOBS IN BRIEF

In general the contract consists of preventative maintenance of the equipments. The job involves cleaning, inspection and reclamation of fill packs at height inside Cooling Towers. The clogged materials are mostly mud, biological growth in solid/ semi-solid condition. The removed material shall be transported to the designated area within 5 Km radius.

COOLING TOWERS:-

In Stage-II there are 08 nos of Cooling Towers of Size 129.40 M x 18.80 M. Each cooling tower is having 10 cells of M/S Paharpur make. The cooling Towers are of counter flow type with PVC film type fill. The hot water distribution is through butterfly valves discharging through PP nozzles inside the cell. Cold water is collected at the bottom and discharged into an open channel. Water flow through the Tower is 30,000 M3/Hr.

The equipment consists of fill packs of size 5 ft x 4 ft x 1 ft approximately. There are 650 nos. of fill packs/cell. Fill packs are prepared by gluing of 18 sheets of PVC cross corrugated fill sheets. The weight of new fill pack is 22 Kg (approximate). The weight of clogged fill pack in wet condition is 120-130 Kg (approximate). The weight of clogged fill pack in dry condition is 40-50 Kg (approximate). The weight of cleaned fill pack is 22-24 Kg for normal fill cleaning.
