1.0 Introduction:
Company Profile:
NTPC Limited (established in 1975, formerly known as National Thermal Power
Corporation Limited) is a leading Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of
Power, Government of India.
The total installed capacity of the company is 53,651 MW (including JVs &
subsidiaries) with 21 coal based (40355 MW), 7 gas based (4017 MW), 1 Hydro based
(800 MW), 11 solar based (878 MW), 1 Wind based station (50 MW) and 1 Small
Hydro (8MW). Through its JV’s and subsidiaries, NTPC Group also owns 8 Coal based
stations (5584 MW) and 1 gas based station (1967 MW).
Construction works are in progress at various projects of NTPC & its JVs/ Subsidiaries
for additional capacity of 21,071 MW.
NTPC has diversified its business portfolio vertically as well as horizontally and has
presence in the entire value chain of the power generation business. NTPC has
undertaken backward integration in a big way through venturing into Coal Mining.
NTPC is developing 10 coal mine blocks with estimated geological reserves of about
7.3 Billion Tonnes. NTPC expects to produce about 107 MTPA of coal from these
blocks. Two coal mines of NTPC namely Pakri Barwadih and Dulanga have started
coal production and others are at different stages of development.
NTPC has formed 6 Subsidiaries and 20 Joint Venture companies in order to increase
its core business and for strategic business diversification. Apart from power
generation & coal mining, NTPC has also ventured into consultancy, power trading,
ash utilization, fertilizer etc.
NTPC aims to have an installed capacity of 130,000 MW by the year 2032 with a well-
diversified fuel mix comprising 65% coal, 5% gas, 25% renewable energy and 4%
hydro power based capacity. As such, by the year 2032, 30% of NTPC’s installed
generating capacity will be based on carbon free energy sources.
NTPC is currently developing a 1320 (2X660) MW Coal based project in Bangladesh in
Joint Venture with Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) under the name
and style of ‘Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company (Pvt.) Limited’. NTPC and
BPDB each hold 50% Equity in the Joint Venture Company. The Company is also
